I (27f) feel stuck in my marriage to (28m) and wonder if I'm overreacting by feeling like it's abusive.

I'm sure this will be long, but I want to give as much detail as I can so I can get accurate advice. I appreciate if you stick it out.
My husband and I dated in high school (I was 16) then reconnected a few years ago when I had just turned 21. We started dating again and I fell fast. In the beginning he said and did all the right things. I felt so special and cared for. Then I got pregnant. It was a total accident. I was on birth control, but I guess I'm the lucky 1%. At that point we had only been dating 5 months. I was young and scared, but he seemed excited to be a dad and was really supportive, so I kept the pregnancy and moved in with him. After the baby was born, we decided to elope. At this point we had been together a little over a year. It was all way too soon, in hindsight, but I was terrified of being a single mother at my age and this gave me some false sense of security.
Shortly after getting married he got really quiet one day and said he needed to tell me something. He said he felt guilty moving forward without me knowing that he had cheated on me at the beginning of our relationship. He had met up with his ex multiple times and they had slept together. It all happened before I got pregnant. I was devastated and I honestly haven't been the same since. I was once a happy bubbly person, and now I just feel insecure and dead inside. But there's more to that too, which I will get to.
I should have left him then, but I didn't. We had a new family and again, I was terrified of being alone with a baby at such a young age. I decided to try to forgive him. And I truly have tried, but it's just so hard. It hurt me down to my core.
We've now been married for almost 5 years. In that time he has stopped wearing his wedding band, and become this cold distant person. I sleep on the couch every single night. I tried sleeping in bed with him one night because I thought it would help us feel close again, but he just said he's used to sleeping alone now and felt indifferent about me being there. Despite not sharing a bed, we were having sex somewhat regularly. However, as time has gone on, he no longer shows me affection or makes me feel attractive, and in turn I have no desire to sleep with him. We seem to have hit an impasse where he believes his duty is to work and bring home money, watch tv or play video games, eat, shower, then go to bed. He encouraged me to quit my job when our child was born, so he seems to think my duty is taking care of the child, cleaning, cooking, and having sex whenever he feels like it. I tried to turn my hobby into an income and open an Etsy shop, but he didn't like that since it was taking time away from housework and he accused me of being "addicted" to it.
In addition, he has taken to hiding his phone. I have never had free access to his phone. He keeps it locked and I don't know the code. When he gets a text he angles the phone away from me. When he gets a call he takes it outside. No matter who it is. Last summer he broke his phone and reverted to using an old flip phone until his new one came in. Since he couldn't lock it with a passcode, he started sleeping with it in the pocket of his pajama pants. I guess so I couldn't get to it? Even though I sleep on the ocuch, I still use the master bathroom, so one night after he was sound asleep I noticed the phone fell out of his pocket. I sneakily took and went through it in another room, then quietly replaced it. Everything was deleted, he left nothing for me to find. By this point I was just wishing I could find anything at all to indicate he was cheating so I would have an "excuse" to leave.
Over the past year or so I began to fantasize about leaving. I would fantasize about being in a relationship with someone who loves me and shows it. I have dreams at night that I am with someone who hugs me and makes me feel appreciated, but then I wake up and face reality and I am sad.
I have asked my husband if there's someone else and he says no. I have asked if he's happy and he says "I don't know." I have asked if he wants a divorce and he says "I don't know." I just want him to tell me SOMETHING.
Over the years he's told me no one would want to date someone my age with a kid and an ex-husband, that he's the only one who would accept me in that "condition." I feel like he doesn't want me earning my own money because money=independence. I've lost touch with all my friends and 95% of my family, so I have no one to talk to about how I feel. He makes me feel like shit if I visit my dad or my friends. He will blow my phone up asking when I'm coming home. And if I'm not home to make dinner when he gets off work, he seems miffed. If he comes home and the house isn't clean, I hear "What did you do all day?" He NEVER helps me with our child. I feel like a single parent. When we go somewhere I am responsible for packing what we need, getting myself and the kid ready, packing the car etc. He sits in his recliner asking every few minutes if I'm ready yet, and getting pissy when it takes a while. I am constantly anxious about making him mad.
I used to be in charge of budgeting for us. I was very frugal and used coupons to save us the most money. Within the last year or so he's become very secretive and protective over money. He withdraws his paychecks into cash and keeps the cash hidden. Because of this my debit card is useless. He gives me cash for groceries and bills and occasionally may let me get something for myself. I never really know how much money we have. And although he's mostly cold and apathetic, he has twice come home with gifts for me. Once he bought me a ring for our anniversary, and another time for my birthday he came home with a new iphone. I loved the phone but I am always suspicious he's cheated again and is buying a gift because he feels guilty.
He never tells me when he's coming home from work anymore. Twice lately I've caught him in a lie. He works with his brother and one day their boss told them not to come in, so instead of coming home they went to a casino and spent the equivalent of a workday there, then came home like nothing was off. I found out after the fact. Another day this happened, and I suspect they went to a strip club but I have no proof. Again, I found out after the fact. I usually ask him to tell me when he's leaving work because his commute is the perfect length of time for me to prepare dinner. It would be hot and ready for him when he walked in. Now he no longer tells me when he's leaving (it's different every day) and just barges in like he's trying to catch me doing... something? He then goes straight to the shower and I start dinner, he eats and plays his game or watches tv then goes to bed.
He has never hit me, but he punches walls, throws things, slams doors etc when he's really mad. Almost every time we fight he storms out of the house and most of the time will jump in his car and leave. I don't know where he goes. Sometimes I guess he goes to his mom's or his brother's. He will be gone a few hours and will come back home and give me the cold shoulder. If I ask him anything all I get is "I don't know."
Most of our fights lately are over sex. For the past several months I have felt so down. I've told him that I want to feel like he wants me, that I want physical and verbal affection, literally anything. He literally never compliments me at all, not even my cooking, but especially not my appearance or... well... anything at all. I have not heard a single kind word about myself from him for quite a long time. So no.... I don't want to have sex. But if I refuse he throws an absolute tantrum and goes on about how he's working hard all day to make money for his family and I can't even do this for him. He complains that he doesn't get blow jobs. He pushes and pressures me until I just give in and have sex. It has gotten so bad that last time I just kept staring at the clock counting the minutes until it was over. I almost dissociate from myself while it's happening, and sometimes I cry. He never notices.
Our biggest fight occurred yesterday morning. I was asleep on the couch and he had woken up way early. Our kid was up and playing in the living room, husband was watching tv. I took advantage of him being up and able to watch the kid, and dozed back off. I woke up to him on top of me on the couch. My arms were pinned under the blanket and I couldn't move them because his legs were on either side of me, so I started to panic (I'm claustrophobic). He was wanting me to wake up and have sex right then and there. I was confused and panicked, and just kept saying no. Not to mention, our kid was RIGHT THERE. He got so ANGRY. I've never seen him blow up so badly before. He stormed out of the house and slammed the door so hard it bounced open. He got in his car and his tires squealed as he left the driveway. He stayed away about 3 or 4 hours. When he came home he refused to talk until I pushed him. He went off about how I am always turning him down and then went in the bedroom and closed and locked the door. He has been in there ever since. He comes out for food sometimes, but doesn't speak to me or interact with the kid.
Finally last night I had had enough. I was in our kid's bedroom for bedtime routine, and he was still locked in the master bedroom. I sent him a text asking what we're doing. He said "I don't know." I kept asking different questions, and every response was "I don't know." I said "Do you want a divorce?" and he says "I don't care anymore." So I told him I take that as a yes. He texts back "Fine, do what you want." I tell him I don't WANT this but I don't know what else to do anymore. He again says "I don't know." It's infuriating. I finally get the kid to sleep and go back to the living room. I guess he heard me stirring around because I then got a text that says, word for word, "It won't change anything, but you can come in here and fuck if you want." Like... seriously? I told him absolutely not and that as far as I was concerned we need to get a divorce. It's absolutely pathetic that a conversation of this magnitude is being had over text message, but he just will not talk to me.
We woke up this morning and it was more of the same. We got into another fight because he came home with a bottle of whiskey, drank a good bit of it, then got irrationally angry when I tried to have a conversation with him. He kicked our dryer so hard it's dented. He yelled and berated me. I ran to our bedroom to get away from him and he kicked the door in to yell at me some more. I grabbed our child (who heard everything) and left. I stopped at a gas station and bought a phone charger, then went to McDonald's for a happy meal for the little one. I am now in a hotel room at 2am and receiving texts from my husband telling me if I don't come home tonight to not bother coming home at all. He says I can live in my car for all he cares. I have changed all my passwords and I am worried when I do go home he will have destroyed my things. I only have enough money to stay here a couple nights. I wonder if I should have called the police, but my experience watching cops tells me that they probably would have just asked one of us to leave since no one was physically hurt, and since he was drunk it would have been me.
I typed all this here partially because I have been holding it all in for so long with no one to talk to. But also because I guess I just need some sort of validation that this is the right thing to do. My head is spinning and I'm scared. I have nothing of my own of any value. The car and house are in his name, and he has all the cash from his paycheck. I have used money I stashed from birthday cards to pay for getting away tonight, and borrowed $40 from my child's piggy bank. (I will absolutely pay it back!) I feel as if I've been in an abusive marriage all this time, but I also feel that's not fair to say because he's never physically harmed me. My head is just a mess. Do I owe him anything at all? Am I being a brat by not giving in to sex? I have one foot out the door now - should I just keep going? It's scary to think about.
I really appreciate anyone who has read all this. I am dreading hitting "submit" and seeing how long the wall of text is going to be.
TLDR; I am wondering if I'm in an abusive marriage and if I'm justified for wanting out.

EM sneaks entire litter into buffet-style restaurant for some free ice cream, freaks out when staff asks her to leave

This happened about twenty years ago, and I'm still a little bit in awe of how it all went down.
My fiance (now wife) brought me to the Generic Fat Slob Cafeteria in her home town, and we had just settled down in our designated slop zone to enjoy our meal. There were two exits to this GFSC. One was in the front, past the place where you picked out your entree. The other was on the side facing the parking lot. Most people left via the latter door, as it was more convenient, and because most people are lazy fucks. Present author included.
At some point, I noticed a family of about six or seven standing just outside the side exit. It was an Entitled Mom, some indeterminate number of Entitled Kids, and someone who looked like maybe a Entitled Grandma or Entitled Older Aunt. The EM kept poking her head in every time someone left, looking around, and then leaving. I pointed that out to my fiance, and she said "oh, just watch and wait a bit." Apparently this wasn't my fiance's first time at the GFSC.
Pretty soon, a largish group left. (Largish in the sense of "many people" not "a group of fat people," although the latter also applied. This was a GFSC, after all.) EM took that opportunity to motion her EG and EKs in through the side door, sneaking them around the soft-serve artery clogging machine and the carbonated liquid sugar dispensers. They sat down at the table across from ours, which the large group had just vacated and- I kid you not, this is literally what they did- started drinking from the glasses in front of them. EM made a big deal out of showing the kids how to pretend to eat off the plates too, but I think a couple of the little ones just grabbed whatever was in front of them and went to town.
A short while after, EM decided that they had either marked their territory or put on enough of a show that the staff couldn't possibly suspect anything was going on. And so she made all of her kids get up and walked them over to the sundae station and started pulling on the soft-serve machine like it was a slot machine in that casino she left her kids outside at for three hours at that one time. They trundled back to the table and dug face first into their sprinkle coated booty.
About this time, some other patron became upset that their $9-with-$3-off-coupon meal was being trivialized by EM and her brood straight up stealing the choco-twist parfaits and complained. The manager came over and asked to see EM's receipt. And this is what happened (NOTE, the following dialogue is 100% made up since this happened more than two decades ago. I think I caught the spirit of the exchange, though):
GFSC Manager (GM): Ma'am, could I please check your receipt? EM: Why do you need to see my receipt? We're just trying to have some dessert here. GM: Just a routine check, ma'am. EM: The waitress lady took it. GM: We don't do that. You're supposed to put it on that little stand there. EM: (censored) you're (censored) how can you (censored) Oh. There it is. [hands GM a receipt that was on the table] GM: Thanks, ma'am. Can I please see the credit card you used to pay for the meal so I can match up the numbers? EM: (censored) you're (censored) how can you (censored) [MUCH more of the same...] GM: I'm going to have to ask you and your family to leave, ma'am. EM: EM: (censored) you're (censored) how can you (censored) [MUCH more of the same...]
And then came the one thing I absolutely DO remember about that conversation. At this point, the EG looks up from where she's sitting and asks the GM "Can you get someone to put mine in a to-go cup?"
I'll never forget that, because it has become an entry in my wife's and my "matrimonial lexicon." Whenever either of us asks the other to do something that he/she jokingly doesn't want to do, the response will always be "what? do you want me to put it in a to-go cup too?" (e.g. Wife: "Can you make sure you wash my sweaters inside out so they don't fade?" Me: "What, do you want me to put them in a to-go cup too?")
GM didn't think it was quite as funny as we did, or his sense of the customer being always right hadn't fully evolved yet. Either way, he basically threatened to call the cops on the family if they didn't leave. By then all the kids had finished their ice cream anyway, so they all waddled out, EM trailing curses behind her.
On the ride back to her parents' house, my fiance explained that what we had witnessed was a fairly regular occurrence. It was apparently a well-known fact that you could sometimes sneak in and grab a quick snack at the GFSC. Half the time, the staff didn't even do anything about it. All you needed was a little Entitlement and some grace under fire.
tl;dr: Entitled Mom and her entire Entitled Clan sneaked into a cafeteria-style restaurant, sat down at a table, waited until they thought nobody was paying attention, and then went for some soft-serve. Manager confronted EM. EM played the "nuh uh" card. Manager wasn't buying it. EG tossed off a zinger. EF was booted out.

Kia Ora Redditors, I have gone through and analysed wide economic Moat companies listed on NZX. Hope the below helps to narrow down your choices in your investment journey.

Wide Moat, what is that ? Before starting this blog post please read this wide moat businesses explanation here
Okay, now that we are up to speed, before you invest in any wide moat company you need to ensure financials of the business are solid as well, I’ll cover the topic of How to understand the financials of the business in the upcoming blogs so subscribe (here) to know when the blog is out.
Let’s see if we can spot any wide moat business listed on NZX.

Auckland International Airport Limited (NZE: AIA)

Auckland International airport holds a virtual monopoly as the largest airport in NZ and processes the most number of passengers. This is located in the largest city in NZ as well, making it an ideal destination for travelers, With travelers expected to increase in the coming decades, you can clearly see the wide moat around this business.

WILL THE MOAT SHRINK IN THE NEAR FUTURE ?

The likely hood of the moat shrinking is very low since construction of another international airport in Auckland is highly unlikely. Thing to look out for is debt, since airport need vast amounts of money for up keep and improvements( ex: loss of unnecessary capital due to project over runs and delays).
Read a more in depth analysis on Auckland International Airport here

Chorus Limited (NS) - (NZE: CNU)

Chorus manages and builds telecommunications infrastructure in NZ, for ex: when ever you sign up for fiber broadband plan with your ISP, Chorus is contracted to install the connections to your house. As copper cables are replaced by fiber optic cables around NZ, the cost of maintaining these new infrastructure grids are less than before.( Fiber vs Copper wiring: cost of copper and fiber optic cables are stronger requiring less maintenance).

WILL THE MOAT SHRINK IN THE NEAR FUTURE ?

I don’t think the moat will shrink in the near future as setting up a telecom infrastructure company with years of know how is quite difficult, the only way I can see this moat shrinking is if international companies what a piece of NZ infrastructure, but I don’t think the government would allow key infrastructure projects to be outsourced.

NZME Limited (NZE: NZM)

NZME is a New Zealand media company which owns brands such as:
  1. NZ herald
  2. Newstalk ZB
  3. ZM
  4. The Hits
  5. Grab one etc…..
The moat exists but it is a very small one, this moat would have been huge during the hay day of print newspaper readership.
So what has happened here ? Internet….
Print newspaper is virtually dead, newspapers all around the world are struggling to make money as subscribers dwindle.
Due to the drop in readership, less and less ads are placed in the newspaper hence lower revenue.
All the eye balls have moved to “ Social Media”, that’s where the ads are now a days.
The only saving light I can see is Grab One, the popular coupon site in NZ. I do believe this will provide a strong source of revenue to the company but I am not sure if this can offset the losses in the other divisions.

The New Zealand Refining Company Limited (NZE: NZR)

Refining NZ is New Zealand’s only oil refinery and the leading supplier of refined petroleum products to the New Zealand market, including petrol, diesel, aviation fuel and other products As a critical piece of national energy infrastructure, Refining NZ is responsible for supplying:
Moat exists because this is the only oil refinery in New Zealand, It also suppliers around 85% of NZ’s aviation fuel.
I believe the number of travelers to New Zealand will only increase, Provide refining NZ a solid moat, however as electric cars are bound to make in roads in New Zealand, the demand for petrol and diesel will gradually decrease.
So we need to keep an eye out on the financial performance on an annual basis to make sure the business can still maintain the moat.

Port of Tauranga Limited (NS) (NZE: POT)

The Port of Tauranga Located Tauranga (about 200 km away from Auckland) is the largest port in New Zealand in terms of total cargo volume, and the second largest in terms of container throughput.
Total exports:
📷
Total Exports from POT
As you can see the number of tonnes being exported from port of Tauranga is increasing.
Total imports:
📷
Total Imports from POT
As you can see the number of tonnes being imported from port of Tauranga is increasing as well.
I see this trend continuing as the demand for NZ products especially in emerging markets increases and demand for imports increases as NZ population continues to grow.
So the Moat around POT should be in tact for many years to come.

Restaurant Brands New Zealand Limited (NZE: RBD)

Restaurant Brands operates the New Zealand franchises for KFC, Pizza Hut and Carl's Jr. It also operate a KFC franchise in New South Wales, Australia and Taco Bell and Pizza Hut franchise in Hawaii, Guam and Saipan.
As of October 2018, Restaurant Brands has 261 stores: 94 KFC New Zealand, 61 KFC Australia 29 Pizza Hut New Zealand, 18 Carl's Jr., 36 Taco Bell Hawaii and 45 Pizza Hut Hawaii stores. It employs nearly 8,000 staff across New Zealand, Australia and Hawaii and serves 120,000 customers worldwide every day. Since RBD operates the NZ franchises for KFC, Pizza Hut and Carl’s Jr and if you wanted to be a franchisee in NZ then you would have to go through them , this gives RBD an economic moat.
Will the moat shrink in the near future ?
I think the moat will certainly shrink, this is due to the fact that many people are moving away from processed foods to more organic and more healthier options, this will cause sales in fast foods such as KFC, Pizza hut etc to shrink, which in turn means less new franchises opening up. There might even be closures around the corner. So I see the moat being broken pretty soon in the years to come.

SKYCITY Entertainment Group Limited (NS) (NZE: SKC)

SKYCITY Entertainment Group Limited is New Zealand’s largest tourism, leisure and entertainment company. It is one of three major publicly listed casino operators in Australasia.
It has entertainment complexes in:
  1. Auckland
  2. Hamilton
  3. Queenstown
  4. Adelaide
  5. Darwin
SkyCity also owns one of Auckland’s best know attractions “Sky Tower”. Although the revenue generated from sky tower to the overall business is small, it is still a jewel in the sky city crown.
Will the moat shrink in the near future ?
Considering SKC is New Zealand’s largest tourism, leisure and entertainment company, it has all the basis covered for tourists that enter into NZ. It also has large convention centers where numerous conferences are held, I don’t see the moat shrinking any time soon. As they in casino lingo “ House always wins”.

South Port New Zealand Limited (NS) ( NZE: SPN)

SPN is the southern most commercial port in NZ located at Bluff. It is situated in the highly productive province of Southland which is responsible for producing a sizeable proportion of New Zealand’s total exports by value. The region’s major exporters are all situated within 80km of the port.
All the moat characteristics explained for Port of Tauranga (POT) exist here as well.

Trade Me Group Limited (NZE: TME)

Trade me is the largest internet auction website in NZ. It has Trade me property, motors, jobs etc.
Trade me had held a monopoly on internet auctions for quite some time in NZ, but it’s moat has been slowly eroding away, how ?
Trade me jobs is competing against Seek, LinkedIn
Trade me property is competing against realestate.co.nz, oneroof etc.
Trade me market place is competing against Facebook marketplace.
Looking at all the competitions trade me is facing it seems quite difficult to hold down the moat in the future.

Vector Limited (NZE: VCT)

Vector is New Zealand's largest distributor of electricity and gas, owning and operating networks which span the Auckland region. This distribution system gives Vector an economic moat.
Vector has been involved in electrification projects - charging stations for electric cars, which I think is great for future growth. As number of electric cars increase, there will definitely be a need for more and more charging stations which vector can deliver. The moat seems to be very much intact.

Two upcoming trips, looking for the casino most likely to offer mail coupons to use for our next trip.

Hello, I searched previous posts but couldn't really find a question similar to mine so I'm hoping to get some suggestions. I live in California and am traveling to Vegas next week with my husband. We play myVegas and are using comps for 2 nights at NYNY and show tickets. I also have a girls trip planned in July, but we are trying to keep that 2nd trip within a smaller budget. I was hoping to spend most of my time gambling at just one casino rather than casino hopping, in hopes that they will mail home some room offers for my next stay. Are there particular casinos that are more likely to do this than others? My gambling budget for this 1st trip is about $200. Thanks!

How am I in the wrong here?

I'm pretty sure you guys will agree with me, but last night my MIL made me feel like I was a horrible mom. So for dinner we went to a station casino buffet here in vegas. If you're not familiar with these buffets they're pretty much known for being cheap and decent food for the price. With the coupons she gets it ends up being $5 a person. We go like monthly. The food here is in no way good quality food. So LO just turned 8 months. She's eating solids but we're not in a rush. She did veggies for 2 months and we just introduced meat. She loves it. So tell me why MIL is just so excited this time we go to the buffet because she assumes we will be feeding the baby this buffet food? My baby is only eating food I make her. Homemade food. Not this high processed stuff. She even gets a plate with spaghetti and meatballs for her to try. Oh but it's ok guys, she cut up the meatball in little pieces and the spaghetti too. So it's ok. She's good to go. I tell her no. She just ate before we left and had a bottle 15 minutes ago. She makes a big deal out of it. "But why? She's eating food at home! You're going to just let her stare at you while you eat? Deprive her of the food here? That's so wrong." I tell her like I've told her before. "LO is only eating homemade food. For as long as possible." Then dessert comes around and she wants to give her pudding. Again...we've had this talk. I don't want my daughter eating or drinking additive sugar for as long as possible. Yet I'm the bad guy because I won't let her try it. Just a little won't hurt.
Yes I'm sure a little won't hurt. But zero won't hurt either. I know it's impossible to keep sugar away from her forever. She will be eating ice cream and cake before I know it. Is it so wrong of me to not want her to eat that junk until she's at least 4 years? Maybe more?
I'm overweight. My parents never cared why I ate growing up. Mom would take us to McDonald's weekly. I want better eating habits for my daughter. It's not up for discussion MIL.

6 Nights in Vegas - From Someone Cheap

6 Nights in Vegas - On a Budget

A little background on us. I’m 35 my wife is 28. We aren’t major gamblers by any stretch, but we usually hit up a local casino maybe once a month, twice if we do good, and usually gambling about $100 a piece each time. We are both huge sports fans, especially college sports (Notre Dame). I’m a bit of a tightwad most of the time.
The morning of April 2, 2016 I asked her if she wanted to marry me (both of us have been married once before), she said yes. I bought tickets that morning, didn’t tell anyone our plans and drove from South Bend Indiana area to Chicago O’Hare, and arrived in Vegas right around dark.
The first couple of Hotels I tried for were booked, but we ended up finding a room at Planet Hollywood (which we spent all of about 4 hours in). We then flew out the next morning, spending a total of about 12 hours in Vegas.
This time around, after finding out my kids would be with their mom over Spring Break, I decided to save up and actually plan a trip this time. We debated Florida, Canada, the Smokies, and ended up deciding on Vegas.
Tuesday – March 27 We stayed the night at Blue Chip Casino (BOYD Gaming) in Michigan City Indiana (halfway to O’Hare). Both of us had comps for a free room and Buffet’s as well and about $75 worth of food credit that we had been saving for our Vegas trip. They also gave me a $25 gas card. We decided to gamble $100, and lost pretty quickly. After eating our “free buffets” we decided to go to bed, anticipating an early morning.
Wednesday – March 28 Once we got to O’Hare, we went and checked our 1 bag in at the Spirit Airlines desk. Everything at Spirit is A la Carte, and I had paid for 1 checked bag, however the lady in front of me discovered that their checked bags cost even more if over 40lbs. I had gone with Spirit to save a buck, and overall the experience wasn’t terrible, but I’ve had much better experiences with other non-discount airlines. After arriving in Vegas, we rode the bus from the airport to the Rental Car facility, and in short time had our new car for the week. The nice lady at Payless tried selling me several extras, and I politely declined each of them. I’ve come to expect the sales pitch no matter what rental company I use, and overall my experience with these guys was very good. We ended up changing reservations last minute for our Hotel due to additional offers I received while at Blue Chip. After checking in at the Fremont (all 6 nights) we unpacked, stopped at IN & OUT Burger, and made a run to Wal-Mart for snacks and drinks. We then decided to go check out the Nuwu Dispensary, we were both very impressed with the selection, cleanliness, and friendliness of everyone we talked to there (we are novices at this lol). After making a “small” purchase, we decided to drive out to Mount Charleston for the evening and ended up catching the sunset before driving back into town. We spent the rest of the evening walking around Fremont Street mostly just people watching, before we grabbed a snack from the Café inside the Fremont and went back to our room for the night. The food was average at best, but the price was right, even if I hadn’t used my points.
Thursday – March 29 We slept in until about 9:30, and slowly made our way over to the Hoover Dam. On our way to the Dam, we stopped at Sunset Station for their Brunch Buffet, and were really impressed, especially for the $7 price. After gambling a little and not winning we continued to the Dam. Waze had me going some crazy roads that I’d never taken before to get there, and took us about 3 times longer than I had ever remembered. After getting closer and seeing all of the traffic/road construction I now knew why. All of the lower parking lots were full, so we drove to the little gift shop on the Arizona side (I was surprised to see the road now ends here), got a couple of little souvenirs for our boys, and walked around a little bit before exploring Lake Meade a little and driving back to Fremont. After relaxing for a little bit we again decided to walk around Fremont Street and ended up getting Margaritas and Enchilada Nacho’s at Nachodaddy’s. I would highly recommend this place if you want a good drink and great nachos, we both loved it, and our bartenders were great. After walking back to the Fremont and going back and forth on winning/losing at the slot machines, my wife got a bonus feature on the machine she was playing, when I noticed a guy standing behind her watching. He looked really familiar, and after seeing “Deez Nuts” on the back of his jacket, I realized he was the youtube star from the Deez Nuts video. He posed for a picture with my wife and then went on his way. We gambled for a few hours and went to bed about even on the day.
Friday – March 30 After grabbing coffee from Dunkin Donuts inside the Fremont, we decided to drive down to Primm, because my wife had never been to California. We stopped at the truck stop and decided against topping off on gas, due to the price being over $4/gallon. We walked around the shop, found some more souvenirs for the kids, and ate lunch at Qdoba. After driving around behind the outlet mall, I realized there wasn’t a sign saying welcome to California, so I hopped on I15 and continued South/West until she got to see her sign. We went a few exits and decided a trip all the way to Baker wasn’t worth the drive, so we turned around just past the giant solar farm on the right. In the stretch from about a mile outside of Primm to where we turned around, we passed probably a dozen of each Nevada State Police and California Highway Patrol, many of which were on motorcycles and all of which had at least 1 car pulled over. About the time we made it back into Vegas, my buddy’s flight from Washington DC had arrived (he’s getting ready to leave for Japan for the next 3 years) so we went and picked him up at his hotel (Hooters). My wife won some money on the “Vacation” machine in Hooters and we decided to go walk the strip, which wasn’t a bad walk at all. We ended up going through the MGM, across to the Aria/Monte Carlo area and decided all the bars were a bit too busy due to a Golden Knights game getting ready to start. We walked over to Excalibur and rode the monorail to Mandalay Bay. We spent the rest of the evening here, and I decided to bet on Notre Dame Women, which turned out to be a good bet. My buddy, being born in Connecticut bet on UConn and that pretty much set the tone for his luck the rest of his trip. My wife and I ended up getting a giant hot dog/pepsi combo for $3.99 at the Café inside the Fremont after returning, and it was a better bet than the Chinese food we had tried earlier in the week.
Saturday – March 31 Another buddy of ours had moved to Vegas about 6 weeks ago, while his wife and kids are moving out there today. He called me late Saturday morning, and had us meet him out at the RV Dealership he works for. After getting a tour of their half million dollar Motorhomes (built here in Indiana), we hopped in his convertible and rode out to Red Rock Canyon. The line to get in was about 100 cars long, and it looked like they were only letting a few in every 15 minutes, so we drove out along that area and headed back a different way to the south side of town. The company he works for sponsors the Horse Arena at the South Point Casino, so we rode over, watched some of the show, and got the behind the scenes tour of the stalls, practice arena, and got to meet the horses/cowboys. We ended up spending most of the day at South Point, and we really enjoyed it, probably our favorite one on the “strip” so to speak. We ate dinner at Baja Miguel’s and all enjoyed our food. Later on Saturday night we rode back to downtown. My buddy that now lives in Vegas, took us to Container Park, which was really cool. After that we walked back down Fremont Street and I had bet earlier on Michigan beating Loyola in Men’s basketball. Another good choice, however I had to find a casino with a sports book that could cash me out. We ended up going to “The D” and really enjoyed the atmosphere/older machines. My wife ended up playing the old school Horse Racing Quarter Machine upstairs and stayed on it for quite a while. We ended up heading back to the Fremont, where we gambled the rest of our “$200 limit” for the day, and did pretty good. After several hours of gambling, we decided we were hungry, so we walked over to the Café at Binions, and were really impressed with what we had.
Sunday – April 1 We ate the Breakfast Buffet at the Fremont (comped), took an Uber back to our rental car on the other side of town, picked our buddy up at Hooters and headed north to Zion National Park. A couple hours later we arrived and were somewhat surprised that it wasn’t completely packed. My buddy has a free pass (Military) so we saved $30 on the gate fee. We spent most of the day at Zion, climbing, hiking, and exploring, it was my 4th time there, but the first time for my wife and buddy, and while my wife isn’t a hiker like me, she really enjoyed it and mentioned that it was one of her top 3 things we did on our trip. On our way back to town we stopped at Casa Blanca in Mesquite for a few hours, we didn’t do any good, but enjoyed the change of pace from the Vegas casinos.
Monday – April 2 We walked the strip again, and ate the brunch buffet at the Bellagio. It was really good, but if I hadn’t used the buy 1 get 1 free coupon I had, I wouldn’t have been quite as impressed. We walked around the strip some more, and ended up buying tickets to X-Country for my wife and I for the 10pm show at Harrah’s. The lady at the Box Office didn’t offer any discount, but when I asked about using my players card, she gave me a $10/ticket discount on the tickets. After that we drove across town to Sams Town (Boyd Gaming) and gambled for a few hours, I remembered a Steak House from several years back that I really enjoyed here, but we ended deciding against it for our anniversary meal. After going back to our hotel to change and shower, we ended up going to Viva Zapata’s (based on Reddit reviews). We weren’t disappointed! The food was amazing, the atmosphere even better, and the wait staff was the best! Our waiter asked what brought us out there, I told him it was our 2 year anniversary and we had flown in from Indiana to celebrate. We were enjoying the live Mariachi music, but started getting a little anxious as we were waiting on our bill (we wanted to get to Harrah’s by 9:30). A few minutes later here came the wait staff/musician to our table, put giant sombrero’s on us, gave us a couple of churros and each of us a shot of Tequila (no charge) while they sang us a song. I tipped them well and we were on our way to the show. My wife is a huge country music fan, and while I enjoy some of the older stuff, I’m more of a metalhead. I was pleasantly surprised at the price of our tickets, and for the money, the show wasn’t bad. 1 of the dancers really stood out from the rest though, but all in all it was a good experience. I wanted to go see Absinthe but found out they weren’t playing on Monday night. After our show we walked down to the Bellagio Fountains to see a show before heading back to the hotel.
Tuesday – April 3 We spent most of the morning packing up from our 6 nights at the Fremont, I checked with the Casino host to see about possibly comping more than 2 of our nights, but she showed me where my score in their algorithm was only a 65, and needed to be 100 to qualify for more. I still only paid $165 for the 4 nights I had to pay for, which was more than fair in my opinion, considering how little time we actually spent in the room. We went to Hooters and gambled for about 20 minutes, winning a couple hundred dollars, then took my buddy to the airport. Our flight wasn’t until 6:30pm, so we drove back North and had to try another Reddit suggestion for our last meal in town. We ended up at Hamburger Hut as we love to eat wings, and although the location and building were a bit sketchy, we ordered hot wings, a hot dog, and chili fries, this was our favorite food of the trip. We also really enjoyed hanging with some of the locals while we ate lunch. After eating lunch we hit up Walmart by the airport to find some last minute souvenirs to take back home, and then returned our rental car and waited a few hours for our flight back home.
What I would recommend
Sight Seeing - Zion National Park, Red Rock Canyon, Lake Mead, Container Park (especially if you have kids)
Food - Hamburger Hut, Viva Zapata’s, In & Out Burger, Nachodaddy, Hotdogs at South Point, Breakfast Buffet at Sunset Station, also saved a bunch of money by getting snacks and drinks for our room at the grocery store on day 1.
Casinos – As a gambler, the ones off the Strip seemed to pay better, but the ones on the strip were much classier and had newer slots you can’t find elsewhere. My 3 favorite were the Fremont, The D, and South Point. My wife really enjoyed seeing the sights at the Bellagio, the Flamingo, and others on the Strip. No matter what, if you’re going to gamble, get a players card, it saved me a bunch of money.
Transportation – If you like to do more than just stay in town and walk all week, I’d highly recommend getting a rental car like we did (about $200 for the week for a nice sized car), but if you don’t plan on going on long day trips like we did, UbeLyft would be great.
Entertainment – XCountry at Harrahs wasn’t the top show I’ve ever seen, but 2 tickets for $80 something and a happy wife, I can’t complain at all. Watching all the entrepreneurs on Fremont Street as well as the stage shows for free was hard to beat, and any trip to Vegas should include the Bellagio Fountains, the Flamingo Habitat, and any other free entertainment you can find along the strip.
What I wouldn’t recommend
Airlines – don’t go with the budget airlines expecting to save a bunch of money if you plan on taking a bag with you, checked or carry on, prefer to pick your seats out in advance, or want to get a snack while flying.
Food – While we didn’t really have any “bad” experiences, the café and Buffet at the Fremont were probably my least favorite, but I can’t complain because I didn’t have to pay for anything at either of them. Also I was looking forward to checking out Heart Attack Grill (based on Ducktales review), but they were packed and took Cash Only fyi.
Sight Seeing – Fremont Street after dark really isn’t the place to take your small kids but be sure to take them to Container Park during the day, Hoover Dam (unless you go early), Red Rock Canyon scenic trail on a holiday weekend. Pawn Stars was packed and if you’ve seen it once, the excitement kind of wore off, and they apparently charge for parking now. I parked up the street for free and only had a short walk, but the people trying to push you to buy extras outside of the store really kind of rubbed me the wrong way.

Trip Report - Not your usual Vegas trip, 5 Nights @ Hilton Grand Vacations at the Flamingo

This is our second trip to Vegas this year. This was not a typical Vegas trip as we planned on staying in most of our vacation.
The first trip, my wife and I dutifully spent 4 days visiting and sightseeing as much as possible.
This time around we were looking for a staycation away from home, and Vegas at this time was the most affordable.

Hilton Grand Vacations at the Flamingo
I dont know how old this property is, but it seems newish. I booked it in a hurry because it came with a one bedroom suite and a full kitchen. We wanted to stay in and just unplug so this place seemed perfect.
After booking we found out that the Flamingo Go Pool plays loud music everyday 9AM - 6PM during the warm seasons and that a lot of guests were super mad about being able to hear the non-stop music in their hotel room.
This worried me a lot and I tried to do more research on the place, but there was no conclusive evidence that the music wouldnt be bothersome. Some guests reported that the music was no bother, and others were furious.
Since I was staying 5 nights, I tried to tip the front desk $50 and asked for the quietest room they could get me because I heard about all the complaints. The receptionist refused the tip and said there wasnt much they could do but give me two options of rooms. One on a higher floor, overlooking the party pool, and the other on a very low floor in the corner. I guessed the lower floor would be quieter, because the higher room was directly in line of sight with the speakers.
Good new was that were not at all bothered with the music. Most days we couldnt hear it without focusing on it.

Day One - The entrance to the Hilton is hidden off to the right on the way to the Flamingo valet area. After unpacking real quick we headed out to get food and supplies for the week. We planned on going to Costco, but it was closed. We ended up going to Sprouts (which is great, but the meat and seafood counter didnt seem as fresh as in SoCal), Albertsons/Vons. We got a case of water, beer, steaks, cheeses, breads, and some veggies. When we got back to the hotel, we had the bellman bring up our groceries and got started on some steaks. We watched Game of Thrones and went to bed.
Day Two - We woke up, watched Game of Thrones, went to the Hilton pool (this is a separate pool from the Go Pool), drank some beers, made some lunch, and got dressed. Not necessarily in that order. In the evening we watched Beatles Love and it was awesome if you like the Beatles. We wanted to try Spagos, but they were closed so we walked across the street to White Castle. White Castle here is great, although I've never had it other than the frozen stuff. The frozen stuff actually tastes a like the fresh stuff, but I dont know if its a good or bad thing. We ate a bunch and were happy tho. Then we go some $1 beers at Casino Royale, lost $40 to slots and walked home.
Day Three - Same morning routine. Wake up, eat, drink, Game of Thrones, Minecraft. We met a friend and checked out Downtown Las Vegas. The entire street is fun with street performers and lots of bars. We decided on pizza at Pizza Rock, and was not impressed. Their famous margarita pizza is burnt. I like burnt charred foods, but the pizza was a little too much char and a little underdone. We tried a regular pepperoni pizza, which was better but nothing special. Then we spent most of our time at Oddfellows drinking cheap beer and waiting for karaoke. Oddfellows was a cool bar and they were playing Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (my favorite). The place reminded me if a hip bar scene in Los Angeles. We never made it to karaoke and retired for the night.
Day Four - Same morning routine. We went to lunch at Lotus of Siam. Great spot. We love Thai, and have our favorites here in LA. This place was as good as or better than some of our favorite spots. This video with Anthony Bourdain is a good guide for this place. We werent happy with our pizza the previous day, so we went out in search of Secret Pizza. Secret Pizza did not dissapoint. What I assume is the owner was working the pizza and he looked like he could have been related to the owner of one of my favorite NY pizza places. Last time we tried Pin-up Pizza, and its hard to say which one is better. They were both pretty close.
Day Five - We tried out the Go Pool. As a guest of HGV at Flamingo, we had a line pass to get in. The pool isnt as big as I imagined and it was bustling. It was surprisingly fun, and the DJ played some good songs. We hung out and enjoyed the pool for an hour or so. Watch where you step here though, I thought there were stairs leading into the pool and mis-stepped landing on my butt. I bruised my tailbone and it still hurts. :( We then went thrift store shopping. There are some large Goodwills here and we went to Savers. After thrift store shopping, we went back to the strip to the Hermes store in Caesars. We bought a nice scarf and checked out Spago's. Spago's was delicious, but we found that it wasnt as experimental feeling as the one in Los Angeles. No complaints about the food. We then checked out the High Roller. There was a guy selling tickets at the street entrance and sold tickets for $5 off. The High Roller was pretty amazing even without booze. It goes around once during your 30 minute ride and it is massive. Because it looks like a ferris wheel, I dont think people can wrap around their heads how big and how high this thing goes.
Day Six - We packed up and went to Wicked Spoon. First we went to the Las Vegas Advisor office to buy a coupon book for $37. It included a BOGO Wicked Spoon coupon, and we might use the other coupons later. Wicked Spoon is a nice buffet. The carving station meats were are very well done (the beef was served rare, but it was well done as in delicious). There were a lot of delicious things to try. In comparison with The Bachannal, we liked this place better. For the price, Bachannal wasnt worth it for us. The Wicked Spoon hit a good price to value ratio. On our way out, we played some roulette and won a little spending money. We hurried back to the Hermes store and picked up another scarf! On the way home to Los Angeles, we stopped by the oldest Del Taco. The food they had was of better quality than a regular Del Taco.

Anyway, I'd stay at the Hilton Grand Vacations at the Flamingo again. Its right by the strip near the center. Its a great value, and it comes with a bedroom and kitchen (they have a one room bedroom only rooms too)
Thanks Vegas!
